In a heavily warehoused area of southeast Memphis, we went birding after five oclock. Our idea was to go behind some of the warehouses and bird the hidden green places behind and between the warehouses and their parking lots. We had seen Nighthawks and Kestrals there before.
Development continues at a heedless pace but nature nudges thru the little places in-between. We were surprised to find a wildlife jackpot in a small pond hidden behind a line of trees at the rear of the parking lot of the Crown Bolt Inc. at 1690 Freeport. This is a small green niche completely surrounded by large warehouses and lots of asphalt.
We spotted our first Common Yellowthroat, a deeply yellow male with a black zorro mask, perched at the top of a small mimosa tree. Floating on the pond were twelve Canada Geese who stared at us. Swimming inside the pond were two beavers. One was busy lining their lodge with grass ( It looked like that, but who knows. He had a pawful of grass in his mouth as he swam toward the lodge ). Fun, fun, fun.
Take Hickory Hill south of Shelby Drive to Freeport Road, but go back north and drive behind the line of warehouses. Follow the line of trees till the parking lot bends around the warehouse. But stop. The beaver pond is right in front of you, hidden by the line of trees.
