We live along the flight path that a good number of gulls take from their roost to their feeding grounds. Mostly Ring-billeds but on occassion, I've found a joker or two in the flocks. This morning (Thurs, 8 Jan) there was a first-winter HERRING GULL sticking out like a sore thumb in a flock of about 120 Ring-billeds. Uncommon species in Knox Co but this has been a good year for them in the area. All winter I had been getting by with 7 PINE SISKINs that were making regular feeder visits. Yesterday morning (Wed, 7 Jan) 25 blew in (perhaps literally given the high winds). Similar numbers were back this morning. We are also getting fairly regular visits by a good number of PURPLE FINCHes.
