[TN-Bird] Henslow's Sparrow, etc. (Washington Co., TN)

28 April 2004

Washington County (Keebler Road and nearby areas in Limestone and
Telford)

Before going to work this morning, I travelled to Keebler Road in hopes
of finding the Henslow's Sparrow reported by Don Holt yesterday. At
7:57 a.m., I heard and saw it in exactly the same mustard plant
described in Don's post of earlier today. The distance was a little far
to allow me to pick up much visual detail, but I could clearly see the
short tail, the pronounced rufous on the upperparts, and the greenish
head clearly contrasting with the back and wings. The song was textbook
perfect and louder than I expected it to be from the distance at which I
was viewing the bird.

Thanks, Don, for pointing out this rare treasure.

Also present in the area were:

Northern Harrier (Keebler Road);
Solitary Sandpiper (2);
Hairy Woodpecker;
Eastern Kingbird (3);
Tree Swallow (2);
Northern Rough-winged Swallow;
Horned Lark (singing on Keebler Road);
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher;
Brown Thrasher (2);
House Wren (3);
Wood Thrush (Clark Road);
Yellow-rumped Warbler;
American Redstart (Clark Road) (first of year);
Common Yellowthroat (2);
Blue Grosbeak;
Savannah Sparrow (2);
Grasshopper Sparrow (5);
White-crowned Sparrow (5);
Orchard Oriole (2).
