Hardin County
Pickwick Dam
Savannah Bottoms-Coffee Landing Road
Earlier today, I visited the campground below Pickwick Dam to look for
Brown-headed Nuthatches (saw 2, heard several others, despite the wind). There
were several crows near the boat ramp, so I started listening, and quickly was
rewarded by the nasal sounds of Fish Crows. There were nine Fish Crows in the
area, all very vocal. This is a new high count for the county. Fish Crows
were first recorded here two years ago on the Savannah CBC, and have seemed to
take up residency. I did not get to check last summer, but I did have two
birds together into late winter last year, and 2 pair of the nine birds today
seemed to be paired, judging from behavior. I will try to check back later
this spring to see if I can confirm breeding.
I also checked the flooded fields along Coffee Landing Road near Savannah. To
access this area, cross the Tennessee River from Savannah on Hwy. 64, then turn
right at the first road. The flooded area will be on the right after the road
makes a sharp left turn. My visit was rewarded with 50 Blue-winged Teal, 4
Northern Shoveler, 500 Lesser Golden Plover, 100 Lesser Yellowlegs, 50 Greater
Yellowlegs, 50 Pectoral Sandpipers and 8 Least Sandpipers. This is one of
largest concentrations of shorebirds I have ever seen in Hardin County, and the
largest flock of Golden Plovers I have ever seen away from the Mississippi
River.
