As of 8:05 pm the Roseate Spoonbill was still at Thomas farm on Hwy 27 near
Soddy Daisy, Tn. I would like to make an ammendment to Kevins earlier post
pertaining to directions. If you are traveling north on Hwy 27 ( 4 lane
divided
hwy.) then Thomas farm is on the left. After you reach Thrasher Pike and make
a turn around going back toward Chattanooga then the farm will now be on your
right!
Earlier in the morning the spoonbill was in plain view. Sometime after lunch
I returned to the site but the bird had moved much closer to the road. It
was in another puddle of water up next to the right of way fence at the
beginning of a tree line on the right.
We returned at 6:45 pm between 6:45 and 6:50 the bird flew up toward the
lake. Just before 8 it flew back to the origional area passing overhead twice
before flying to another small but larger puddle of water to our right but
still
left of the lake. Only "occasionally" could we see the bird and a scope
became a necessity.
If you come on Sunday morning I would suggest to start looking in the
vicinity of the lake and slowly moving on down the road. After you pass the
lake
there is a narrow body of water than transects the property which is also a
good
place to look. The spoonbill was last seen in a "depression" just left of
the narrow body of water. If you still haven't seen the bird the next marshy
area you come to is the origional site. If you pass the area where the power
lines cross the road (big metal towers) you have probably gone to far.
