Kingston Steam Plant, Roane County, east Tenn.
Sorry I didn't get this report out earlier today. Holiday stuff........
I spent a couple hours at the Steam Plant this morning looking for the tern,
but did not see it. There were 3 other birders there before me, and they
hadn't seen it either. There were no terns there at all.
I walked around all of the ponds - there is a new one up the hill. It had a
dozen+ WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERs and there were 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERs in the
area.
It was still a worthwhile trip. Here's what was there:
Canada Geese
Mallard
7 Blue-winged Teal
a few calling Northern Bobwhite
2 Double-crested Cormorants
Great Blue Heron
1 Great Egret
5+ Black-crowned Night-Herons
Black & Turkey Vultures
Osprey (at least 3 nests in the area)
Semipalmated Plover 2
Killdeer
White-rumped Sandpipers - at least 30 scattered among three different ponds
Mourning Dove
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Chimney Swift
N Flicker
Willow Flycatcher
E Kingbird
White-eyed Vireo
Blue Jay
American Crow
all 6 swallow species (only 1 Bank)
Carolina Wren
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
E Bluebird
Wood Thrush
N Mockingbird
Eur. Starling
Yellow Warbler
Prothonotary Warbler (along Emory River)
Com. Yellowthroat
Grasshopper Sparrow - have not heard any along the parking area this year.
This one was in a new location for them (as far as I know). It was between the
Emory River and the newest ash ponds.
Song Sparrow
N Cardinal
Blue Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting
Red-winged Blackbird
E Meadowlark
Com Grackle
Orchard Oriole
House Finch
American Goldfinch
also dozens of Spot-winged Gliders (dragonflies)
Hope someone re-finds that tern!!
