[TN-Bird] Greene Co. double daylight owls.

March 26, 2006 I was unable to join the Greeneville chapter on their
western Greene Co. trip Sat., but I did get out to the Lick Creek WMA
refugesfor a little while Sun. evening. The Turner Lane area held several
mixed blackbird flocks of grackles, red-wing blackbirds, cowbirds and
starlings, but I could not find any Brewer's. I did have my first Purple
Martins (3) fly over. The next stop at Lick Creek WMA, Beulah was a little
quite in the wet areas, a lone killdeer. I did locate a Red-shouldered hawk
apparently checking out the "frog puddles". It perched about 10 ft. off the
ground and seemed to peer down in them. Also had a winter wren along the
creek. The last stop Lick Creek WMA, S. Mohawk had a phoebe, junco, and
White-crowned sparrow as I was walking to the barn. I had seen owl signs
(feathers and pellets) on previous visits, but this time I slipped in about
1710, and there was an adult BARN OWL perched in the rafters. I eased out
not disturbing him further. The simi-flooded fields held a similar
collection that Don Miller reported. I only saw one short-eared owl at
1825,it was diving and "barking" at a perched red-tailed hawk. I saw 6
harriers and 4 Savanna sparrows. I was trying to make a Lincoln's sparrow
out of one of the mixed flock of song and field sparrows, but I wasn't
familiar enough with them to say for sure. A flyover Water pipit finished
offmy day. Been Birding lately? Ben Britton Morristown, TN Hamblen Co.
