The small lake at J. Travis Price Park in Springfield today has four
Greater White-Fronted Geese and one Ross's Goose which arrived
overnight joining eight Snow Geese which have been there since
November. (Three earlier Ross's Geese that were at the park for
nearly a month left on Christmas Day.) In addition, there is a lone
Pintail, a pair of Gadwall, a Black Duck and a female Northern
Shoveler?not to mention the numerous Canada Geese, Mallards and
various feral species.
Though there's considerable variation in size amongst the many Canada
Geese that have recently congregated, I didn't see anything appearing
to be a Cackling Goose.
The neighboring fields along the Greenway have been very dependable
for a flock of American Pipits, though they're extremely hard to find
in the corn-stubbled rolling hills unless they take flight. Five flew
over as I was watching the geese today. Eastern Meadowlarks reside
here too, and the warm weather a few days ago had them singing
persistently.
Springfield is accessible via I-65 and I-24. Also, both Hwy 41
(Dickerson Rd) and Hwy 431 (Whites Creek Pike) go from Nashville to
Springfield, eventually becoming Memorial Blvd. To reach J. Travis
Price Park, at the intersection of Hwy 49 & Hwy 431/41 (also the
intersection of 5th Ave & Memorial Blvd.) go north on Hwy 431/41.
You'll go past Sulphur Fork Creek, and just past the fairgrounds (on
your right) you'll see an obvious blue sign for the park at Blackwood
Rd. Go right and the entrance to the park is less than a mile on the
left. The small lake with the birds is near the entrance and parking
lot.
