Rock Hill, Cocke county, 6/25/09, by 6 observers in 2 canoes
After fourteen great blue herons took flight downriver , we came upon
some nests in a row of sycamores on the south bank of the French
Broad, near "Mile 79" on the Newport USGS quadrangle. We counted 16
nests; seven were still occupied by standing individuals. It was the
first time for us on this section of the river (which has several deep
caves in the limestone cliffs on the north bank); there doesn't appear
to be any previous documentation of the heronry.
