[TN-Bird] Great Egret Nests - Hamblen County

Bird Island, Cherokee Lake, Hamblen County, 6/14/09, 5:30-8:00 PM, by

We drove over to Morristown and put in at the Kidwell Access on  
Kidwell Ridge Rd.,  then  motored north 1 mile to Bird Island.  The  
water was choppy as we went around the island and got a rough count of  
birds & nests on the perimeter.  Double-crested cormorants were  
conspicuous on the outside trees, great blue heron nests were somewhat  
deeper in the canopy, black-crowned night heron nests lower & less  
obvious. and we could only get glimpses of what looked to be great  
egret nests deeper in the island grove.  The water calmed and we spent  
about an hour trying to get decent looks, and managed to get a few   
images of great egret nestlings, and a nest structure - three photos  
of different nests  start  at

Partial list o:f individuals and occupied nests:
Double-crested cormorant (500+, 100+ nests)
Great blue heron (160, 50  nests)
Great egret (12 adults, 10 nestlings, 5 nests)
Black-crowned night-heron (65, 12 nests)
