It was a cold damp hour spent at Cove Lake early Sat morn.
I did manage to see and HEAR a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH (my first ever heard
singing in migration) on the back trail at Cove Lake St. Pk. Campbell
County, TN- and NO, I could not tell if it was Bicknells! Lighting too
bad, and not familiar enough with the song differences.
I walked the back trail to compile some data on the Swainson's
Warblers and found the one singing a variable song ( 2 syllable ending)
in a different place-.
Then another area, and another. I walked through the woods and realized
he was probably singing on his territorial "boundaries" now instead of
the one point.
If you did a point count, he was moving around a perimeter area of apx.
150-200 ft. radius. His neighbor nearby sings the usual song with a 3
syllable ending.
So far this Spring, there is a total of 4 Swainsons in the park. 2 of
these birds are in "new" areas from the previous 2 yrs. (1 being in the
outer perimeter areas of the boundary near the interstate and 1 over
across the lake behind the campground.)
WOOD THRUSH are numerous along this trail (10-this morn) and can be
easily seen on the walkway early morn or very late eve. Its probably one
of the best places I have ever seen to have a good close up look at these
at most anytime.
Also had 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, AmM. Redstart
2 Kentucky Warblers on territory.
-2 Catbirds were along the walkway fighting over a Dragonfly I watched
them "hawk" out of the air.
Close to the lake I watched a Robin trying to eat a huge green
catapillar he kept slamming on the paved trail over and over.. I looked
with bins and realized he was trying to kill and eat a "rubber fishing
grub". He dropped it a moment, and I scared him away and took it so he
would not eat it... I wonder if he would have really eaten it?
-Baby Wooducks are about as well as fledgling Robin/Mockingbird and
Chipping Sparrows in my yard today.
The Bluebirds are on their 2nd clutch.
