5/8/2011 Blount Co. At about 5pm today, while driving home on E Lincoln Rd in Maryville, an adult Goshawk sailed across the road directly in front of me. I was driving about 30mph and came within 50 feet of the bird. It was fully slate gray above and light gray beneath with no trace of brown. The cap on the head was noticeably dark and clearly demarcated with white below. There appeared to be white in front of the wrist in the neck area, perhaps contrasting with dark on the cheek. The most striking feature besides the coloration was how thick the bird appeared throughout its length, back to belly, quite different from the Cooper's and occasional Sharpie that are in the area. When I went back, I was unable to relocate it-truly an awesome sight, my first adult of the species.
