These last five days have been great in our yard at the top of the hill.
Tuesday we got over our Red-breasted Nuthatch envy as, after reading about them
being seen in many states and all over Tennessee, a beautifully mature one
appeared in the morning and stayed with us all day. Wednesday and Thursday we
had lots of migrants but nothing new for the month although more Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks joined the ones that had been around since the 13th and increased the
count to over 20 seen at one time. Friday morning began with a spectacular
Ovenbird showing more orange on the head than any previously seen; this bird
sat in the open below deck level about 30 feet away for almost two minutes and
delighted us with its beauty. That same morning we had Chestnut-sided, Common
Yellow-throat, Tennessee, Magnolia, and American Redstart Warblers, our FOS
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (one mature female and one immature), a bunch of FOS
Northern Flickers, 3 flyover Rock Doves (only the third time for our yard) and
heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo that refused to be seen. Saturday the cool front
brought thrushes with a gorgeous Wood, 2 Swainson's and a Hermit, 2 female
Summer Tanagers whose color we think is the prettiest of all fall birds, a
Warbling Vireo that worked at eye level in the walnut tree only 30 feet from
our deck for over 5 minutes, and a Black-billed Cuckoo that lingered on the
edge of the yard about 50 feet away giving us prolonged looks. Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds late this afternoon are down to only 4 as most left ahead of the
cool front. Now we are ready for White-throated Sparrows.
