I had a juvenile Golden Eagle around noon today just north of Springfield on William Woodard Rd. which is just off Hwy 49. I was alerted to the bird's presence by a large (75+) flock of crows that were circling and carrying on. The bird was on the ground in a field and I was able to get good looks for about 15 minutes. At first I considered it an adult because the golden nape was very apparent, but I'd forgotten that the white feathers at the base of the tail, which I saw well, was a 1st-year characteristic. The bird flew north giving me a decent look at it in flight. Despite driving around for a half hour or so I couldn't relocate it. I'll keep looking.
