I'm posting the following at the request of Lindsay Burgreen:
Yesterday, while canoeing the Duck River about 6 miles downstream of Columbia,
TN, I saw a Golden Eagle. It was seen at fairly close range at full soar in
good light for almost two minutes. I was able to ID based on it having the
well-defined, conspicuous light contrast patches at the base of the primaries
and at the base of the tail of a 1st yr. bird. Aside from these 3 light patches
the bird was uniformly dark...no streaky, splotchy appearance as some imm. Bald
Eagles show. Also, its flight silhouette was not like that of an imm. Bald
Eagle. The bird I saw had relatively little head projecting beyond the leading
edge of the wing. I hope someone else is fortunate enough to see it as well.
Thanks,
Lindsay Burgreen
