Dyer Co. TN
I just got a call from Rebecca and Steve Satterfield. They were birding the
Great River Road (highway 181) in Dyer Co. and found a dark ibis. After getting
closer and with better scope views, they decided it had the blue lines and
facial pattern of a Glossy. It was found on the east side of the road at mile
marker #6. This is almost the exact area where we had White-faced a few years
back during another high water year. It is south of 104 and north of the Obion
River bridge. This is one of the birds I kept telling everyone to look for this
past weekend.
As a side note there have been two Black Ducks reported this week up in that
area. These ducks should be looked at closely as they might just as well be
Mottled Ducks if not given a second look. These ducks are now found with some
regularity at a few locations in Arkansas. Steve McConnell and I located one of
first accepted wild groups over there in 1995. Some have been seen as far
north as Bald Knob NWR. Mottled Ducks have interior brown markings on the
contour
feathers where Blacks do not. With good looks the black spot on the bill at
the base of the lower mandible is a good field mark. There are other subtle
markings that can be seen in the field, such as bill color, tone of head and
neck
plus narrow white bars at the speculum. It has been reported shot by hunters
in the state but I've never been able to find a hunter or the birds. It would
be a good bird for someone to find and document for the state list.
On another note from the weekend, Roly Lloyd reprimanded me for not
mentioning the 100 Mississippi Kites we had in view at one time just north of
Black
Bayou in Lake Co. on Saturday. It was a great sight to behold for the 5 of us
as
they fed all around, swooping up insects with great finesse. I meant to
comment on them but just forgot.
The flood waters are slowly receding and the habitat should hold some good
birds over the next few days or week................
Good Birding!!!
