Bitterns eat moles????? Does anyone know if GBHs do the same? This might
explain some of the activities I've seen them engaged in from time to
time, well away from water. Thanks for any information you can provide
on this subject!

a mature American bittern was seen in our side yard approx. 7.15 am
today.
we have a large wooded area ( 1/2 acre) containing a running water pond.
the
bittern however was between the pond and the house on the side lawn, and
appeared to be stalking moles . it was no further than 35 to 40 feet
from
the house. it remained there for 5 to 8 minutes, and once noticed it
assumed
the head up in the air posture. it began to walk towards the pond area,
and
flew into a grove of cedar trees.
we have had several blue herons , as well peliated woodpeckers, and
ducks,
but this is the first Bittern we have seen. very exciting!!!!!!!
