Mark McShane of Georgia asked me to forward this to TN-Bird. Several of us Georgia birders turned out today to see the snowy owl. Hi All, First thanks to Jason Baumgardner for alerting GABO-L concerning the Snowy Owl in Spring Hill TN! In the same spirit as Jason originally posted: "Not Georgia, but due to the significance and being within driving distance I thought I would post this as an FYI." I would also like to pass on an FYI that Max Medley and I headed up to Spring Hill extremely early this morning, arriving at first light at the field next to the Cracker Barrel restaurant just northeast of the interchange junction of Hwys 31 and 396. The bird was not in the field next to the Cracker Barrel, we had all of the TN-Bird posts concerning the bird with us, went over them again, and then decided to setup on the east side of Hwy 31 just south of 396. Almost as soon as we had moved, parked, left the car, and I was setting up the scope, the bird came rising up, seemingly from underneath the center of the interchange bridges, and perched on a pole on the west side of Hwy 31 right in front of us! Very cooperative bird as has been noted on TN- Bird! We, and several new arrivees, had great looks in the scope! After a little while the bird zoomed from the poletop down to the ground on the far side of an interchange ramp on the southwestern side of the interchange. Later the bird moved further southwest of the interchange out into fields there. We had to leave the bird there finally within easy scope range, it's always good when you can leave a rare bird in the field, because that usually means that you were able to get all of the great looks you could have hoped for! What a fantastic and stunningly beautiful find for Tennessee (I have heard that it might be only the 2nd TN record for Snowy Owl) and for the southeast as well! Congratulations to Bill Rogers on finding the bird and thanks again to Jason Baumgardner for alerting us via GABO-L, and to Bill Pulliam and all others involved for the great reports, info, and pictures posted on TN-Bird! All of the TN-Bird posts, including directions and photos, concerning the bird can be read at: //www.freelists.org/archive/tn-bird/01-2009 GPS Coordinates for the Cracker Barrel there: N 35 44.681 W 86 56.284 We also tried for and missed the Pacific Loon posted from Booker T. Washington State Park in Hamilton County (in the Chattanooga area) on the way home. Good Birding All!
