The Tennessee Valley Authority is beginning a major study of the ways in which
it will meet the electrical power needs of its customers over the next 20
years. The products of this study will be a new Integrated Resource Plan and an
associated environmental impact study. TVA is presently conducting public
scoping for this study. See www.tva/irp for more information on this study and
instructions on how you can participate.
The impact on Tennessee's birds may be profound. Things to think about as you
give TVA your opinions include the following:
- How TVA should generate electricity in the future - nuclear, coal, natural
gas, hydro, renewables (wind, solar).
- How TVA's generation of electricity affects birds and bird habitats. Some
important issues here are the impacts of the use of Appalachian surface-mined
coal and the management of ash ponds at steam plants. Many ash ponds currently
provide high quality waterfowl and shorebird habitat. TVA is considering
changing how it stores ash and this could eliminate good bird habitat Also,
studies of wind farms in the eastern U.S. have shown they don't kill many birds
when sited properly.
- The importance of energy conservation efforts.
- The importance of greenhouse gas emissions.
- The effects of any changes on your monthly power bill.
TVA is also about to launch a major study of it's management of the natural and
cultural resources on its lands and waters. Watch for more information on this
study to be released soon.
Forgive me if this post is a bit long, but please take a moment to make your
opinion known.
