Big Sandy Area
I had Yellow-billed, Pacific, Red-necked and Common Loons out from the Port
Road Overlook on Saturday morning. There were 148 loons in view early, the
Pacific showed well and I got a few photos but the Red-throated appeared and
disappeared twice while close but was not to be seen again. I had a bird that
was too far out to be sure but it looked like an immature Yellow-billed but
was extremely difficult to see because of its paler color. Nearby Common Loons
were fairly easy to see and pick up at the same distance. I tried Trailer
Road but the wind had all the loons to the north. I tried Eagle Creek boat
ramp
when the bird went north and had about 20 birds there. Finally, I found the
bird around 2:30 but again in poor overcast lighting and but could settle on
the ID. After the sun came out, I did not see the bird again. I have one photo
of the bird that turned out but it is pretty poor. I'll try to post that
and more photos taken on the weekend tonight.
There are 3 Sandhill Cranes at Britton Ford along with a few greater
White-fronted Geese in with the Canada Geese. Gull numbers were way down from
my
last visit but ducks were everywhere in good numbers with Golden-eye in a few
places.
I photographed an adult Balled Eagle hunting coots out in the TN TR, diving a
gain and again on one group but finally having to give up after a boat sped
past. I saw 2 Bald Eagles during the day, while moving around but the roost
was a different story; between 3 PM and 5 PM, 33 Bald Eagles sailed into to
the trees. There were 19 adults and 14 immature counted and I'm sure I missed a
few.
Good Birding !!!
