[TN-Bird] Foothills Parkway

Blount County, TN
April 30, 2005
10 am to 12:15 pm

Hi folks,

Well, I'm still jealous I can't be in Memphis with everyone. But
today I braved icky (sorry for the technical jargon) weather and went
out for 2 hours on the open section of Foothills Parkway between US
321 and US 129. Migration was happening!

Highlights included over 200 Yellow-rumped Warblers at the Look Rock
campground, gobs of Indigo Buntings everywhere I looked, at least 3
dozen Scarlet Tanagers, a Peregrine Falcon, and individual Nashville
Warblers in 3 different locations.

A couple birds were seen on US 321 coming back into Maryville and are
noted as such.

Here is the list: (* indicates year bird for county for me)
Great Blue Heron (down on 321)
Red-tailed Hawk (321)
Canada Goose (321)
Peregrine Falcon *
Sharp-shinned Hawk
Turkey Vulture
Black Vulture (321)
Wild Turkey
Killdeer (321)
MOurning Dove
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Chimney Swift
Downy Woodpecker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Great-crested Flycatcher
Eastern Phoebe
Barn Swallow
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
American Crow
Blue Jay - 100's
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Eastern Bluebird
American Robin
Gray Catbird
European Starling
Cedar Waxwing
Blue-headed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Ovenbird
(no Parula?!?)
Black-and-white Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler *
Black-throated Blue Warbler *
Black-throated Green Warbler
(wish I'd had Blackpoll, to finish all the "blacks")
Hooded Warbler
Nashville Warbler *
Palm Warbler - at least a dozen
Pine Warbler - at least a dozen, including a female carrying food
Worm-eating Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Scarlet Tanager
Indigo Bunting - dozens!
Northern Cardinal
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Chipping Sparrow
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
Eastern Towhee
Red-winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Brown-headed Cowbird
Eastern Meadowlark (321)
American Goldfinch

Unfortunately, three different times I saw what likely were orioles,
but I never got a good enough look to count any of them, and am still
missing both local orioles on my year list. My Blount County list
for 2005 is now at 154.

Good day!

Charlie
