[TN-Bird] Foothills Parkway

Hi folks,

Tracey and I hiked the Foothills Parkway closed section (north of US
321, Blount County) yesterday.

We saw much of the usual:
Hermit Thrush
Turkey Vulture
Golden-crowned Kinglets
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
Pileated Woodpecker

But the biggest observation was our first-of-year Black Bear sow with
a tiny little cub!

Today I drove the south section of US 321 from Look Rock north to US
321. I saw 2 male RED CROSSBILLS at a location just down from the
parkway, that has become almost regular for this species.

I also saw:
a flock of Wild Turkeys
one RUFFED GROUSE in a location that has had them several times in
the last 3 months: if you drive south from US 321, it's the first
big area of pine beetle-killed trees. I have seen individual (the
same?) grouse there at least 5 times this year.

At home we again had a PINE SISKIN, 6 PURPLE FINCHES and a slew of
American Goldfinches. We now have one femae that is nearly
completely in summer attire. A co-worker has one make goldfinch at
her Maryville home that is completely in breeding plumage.

Charlie
