[TN-Bird] FW: woodpecker damage

I don't know about Tahoe, but at my house in Roane County I just put up with
it. It's either that or shoot my Hairy Woodpeckers. My house is a 3-story
A-frame sided in cedar so the carpenter bees just LOOOOOVE the trim pieces at
each end of the peaked roof and beneath each rain gutter, all but one of which
are much too high and scary for me to go after the bees (unless I want to rope
up for vertical aid climbing). And everywhere a carpenter bee drills into the
wood, the Hairies loudly and diligently rip out the little tunnels and eat the
bees. After a few years of this routine, it looks like someone has thoroughly
shot up the trim with a .50-caliber machine gun. (Fortunately, I live in a
rural area where there are no covenants or complaining neighbors.)
Since I have no intention of putting the Hairies at risk by trying to poison
the carpenter bees, I'm just letting them both go at the trim for now. When
they finally reduce it to "wood lace" that can no longer support even a single
carpenter bee tunnel, I'll replace it perhaps with some kind of
resin-impregnated wood that the bees won't like.
If someone has a theory as to why the bees drill into the trim but not the rest
of the siding, I'm all ears!

I have a friend who has a vacation home in Lake Taho----the siding is of wooden
shakes and the woodpeckers are pecking holes in it. She tacks metal patches
over the hole, but the next time she visits she finds more holes. She is at a
loss as to what to do. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what did you
do to prevent it ?
Thanks,
Robbie Hassler
