[TN-Bird] FW: Soddy Mountain Hawk Report

Soddy Mountain Hawk Lookout
Hamilton Co., Tn.
Off Hwy 111 near Soddy Daisy, Tn.

The SMHW started on Friday September 12th.
The coverage this year has been extremely limited
and the low numbers of recorded hawks are the
evident fact. On a more positive note, we are into
our peak time of the season so, things can only get better!

The Chattanooga Chapter of TOS held a field trip
on Sat. 9-20. Those in attendance were: Harold Birch,
Ryan Shaffer, Kyle Wagner, Clay Seneker, Vaughn
Trentham, Bill & daughter, Jennifer Holt, and Cynthia
and Jimmy Wilkerson. We all had a very good day with
391 Broad-winged Hawks flying over the lookout.
A first time ever, special treat, was "Flat Christopher."
Some of you may remember a 1964 book titled, Flat Stanley
by Jeff Brown. In the book, Stanley becomes flattened
after a bulletin board falls on him. The upside is, he is then
able to travel all over the world by mailing himself inside an
envelope. Jennifer Holt brought her very own Flat Christopher
to the hawk watch and he was able to scout for hawks
looking through my binocular. He wouldn't tell how many
hawks he saw. A second note of interest is that
Vaughn Trentham, after all these years of visiting the lookout,
finally got to see a kettle of Broad-wi nged Hawks.
Congratulations Vaughn!

On Sunday, Cynthia and Jimmy were joined for a brief visit
by Janie and Ric Finch, first time visitors. You guys are always
welcomed back. Hey Janie, FYI we saw a kettle of (26) and
another one of (35) just about the time you all probably got
back to Hwy 111.

You can email off line for directions...
