Subject: Ruddy Shelducks in NJ
NJBIRDS:
Two Ruddy Shelducks are now present in the South Cape May Meadows in
Cape May on Tuesday morning, along with the continuing immature White
Ibis, which is moving around a bit around the main pool and sometimes is
easy to see and sometimes cannot be seen. I mention the shelducks--a
species that has turned up in a number of places in the state and in
other eastern states over the years and generally thought of as being
escapes--because the species has recently expanded greatly to the west
in Europe, and a flock last summer in arctic Canada may well be accepted
by various records committees as being legitimate vagrants, a first for
North America. While I still think that records of this species along
the East Coast are problematic at best (!), sightings should at least be
publicized. But be careful that other species of escaped shelducks are
eliminated. These two birds are not banded and are of full feather, not
that that means too much in and of itself...
