I've lived 5 miles south of the Tennessee/Clinch confluence in Roane Co. since
1999 and have seen only 1 Loggerhead Shrike. It was on Rt 58 on a telephone
wire near the Meigs Co. line, and that was many years ago. I have not looked
exhaustively and repeatedly, but I routinely drive Rts 58, 304, 322, 72, and
perhaps 60% of the little roads that crisscross between the larger
thoroughfares. We have more Cattle Egrets than shrikes.
I thought Sequatchie Valley was supposed to be a relatively good place for
shrikes (the term "relatively" being relative considering their scarcity) ....

shrike in tn
Steve,
Being in Maury County with TWRA for 12 years and logging over 1500 to 2000 =
miles per month driving, i can say with confidence that there are less =
than 10 breeding pairs of shrikes in this county. You might say that loss =
of habitat is the answer, but a couple of my best locations to find them =
are low populated subdivisions.
Good Birding,
