Rankin Bottoms
Douglas Reservoir
Reservoir Elev. 981
Sorry for the late report. We visited Rankin Bottoms last Thursday to
see how the flats were developing; the road through the bottoms was just
becoming exposed. Most of the waders and waterfowl were working the
shallow water in this area. A few Western Sandpipers and one Greater
Yellowlegs were observed along the partially submerged road. We watched
a small flock of Northern Shovelers and a Green-winged Teal work the mud
in this same area, possibly after the little swarms of Water Boatmen in
the shallows. The shovelers moved about by sliding on their bellies on
the mud, much like penguins sliding on ice. It was very interesting to
see this behavior. A Northern Harrier flying over the flats was a real
treat.
Birds of note were the following:
1 Northern Harrier
6 Norther Shovelers (4 hens)
1 Green-winged Teal (male)
1 Gr. Yellowlegs
6 Western Sandpipers
20+ Killdeer
40+ Great Egrets
30+ Great Blue Herons
