I have been waiting to see a report on these ducks but decided to go ahead as
some may have the time to chase these birds down.
Ken Leggett found at least 9 Fulvous Whistling-Ducks just south of the
location where 11 Black-bellied Ducks were found by Criswell a couple of weeks
ago.
These birds need to be watched closely. A few years back I was fortunate
enough to find an adult with young for Arkansas first nesting record for this
species. The birds showed up last year in Lake County and about two weeks later
I
photographed a pair but none were seen there after.
These birds were found at the south end of Owl Hoot Road. You can take Owl
Hoot Road south off 79 Highway. This road turns into gravel and the birds were
seen where the road turns back to the east in the water just to the south. They
seem to be very wary, flushing at a distance when approached. The Bills and
the Satterfields could see only 7 hiding in the weeds on their visit late
Sunday. We saw only two flyby on our visit. Criswell flushed 6 on his visit on
Monday. According to a farmer that Ken had talked to earlier in the week the
birds
had been around for some while.
On Monday afternoon I flushed 3 from the north side of The Great River Road
(#181) from some winter wheat at mile marker number 19. This location is south
of 103 Highway and about 2 miles south of the Owl Hoot location, so there
might be even more around.
Keep an eye out for these birds at these locations and let's find some young.
It may take some time spent just watching as the birds are almost impossible
to see in the vegetation. Sitting at the end of Owl Hoot Road for a period of
time may be your best bet.
Good Birding!!!
