This morning I made a trip to Britton's Ford to try to find the Eurasian
Wigeon. It was not at the overlook, but I found it in a large group of
ducks just down the road. It's brilliant red head and golden crown
stood out from the crowd. While I watched, a Tree Swallow flew just in
front of it.
Most of the ducks present were Mallards and Gadwalls, with a scattering
of Am Wigeons, N Shovelers, Green-wing Teals, and Black Ducks. Several
large flocks of Canvasbacks, Ring-neck Ducks, Lesser Scaup, and Ruddy
Ducks were there, along with a lone male Redhead. A Red-Shouldered Hawk
and N Harrier patroled the area.
On the way out, I stopped again at the overlook, and watched, at close
range in the scope, the beautiful adult Peregrine finishing his
blackbird meal.
I had stopped at the Port Rd site earlier. About 30 Common Loons were
present, but I couldn't pick out any others. Many Pied-billed and
Horned Grebes were there, a few Buffleheads, and one pair of Common
Goldeneyes. There were 2 adult Bald Eagles at the Paris Landing bridge
sandbar, and an immature flying over.
