[TN-Bird] Egrets-Herons and Ibis - West TN

June 7, 2009
Lauderdale-Dyer-Lake
Counties, TN

A tour along the Mississippi River and adjacent flooded fields produced a
few birds, the best being 3 dark Ibis seen leaving the Chickasaw NWR. Too
far for an ID but White-faced would be my bet. A Cooper's Hawk has been a
regular near the parking lot there during the past summers and appeared again
yesterday. Totals for Lauderdale Co: 388 Great Egrets, 151 Little Blue, 48
Snowy, 44 Cattle and a single Green Heron. The only two shorebirds other
that Killdeer were a pair of White-rumped near the Obion River bridge in a
small puddle. Dyer Co: 215 Great Egret, 57 Little Blue, 37 Snowy, and 45
Cattle. Lake Co: 219 Great Egret, 66 Little Blue, 36 Snowy, 187 Cattle and 1
Green Heron. At Mud Lake there were 22 DC Cormorants acting like they were
nested nearby. I did not make it to the east side of Reelfoot Lake.

Most amazing was the few ducks seen, such as NONE from the viewing platform
at Chickasaw and very few anywhere along the roads. Four Bald Eagles (2
adult-2 young) at Chickasaw plus an adult at Mud Lake and 2 over Reelfoot
Lake were among the few raptors soaring but Mississippi Kites were feeding in
large concentrations in all three counties if you scanned the distant sky
line.
Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
