Melissa I was glad you posted about hearing an Eastern Wood Pewee. I watched one at close range for several minutes yesterday (Oct. 31) at The Honors Golf Course in Ooltewah and wondered if anyone would believe me. I guess seeing one this late is not as unusual as I first thought. I looked back through some notes I had made from tn-bird posting to see when was the latest date anyone had reported seeing an Eastern Wood Pewee in Tennessee. I had deleted the post but had made notes. Someone in Wilson County reported one on Nov. 2, 2004. Someone else in Knoxville reported seeing one on Dec. 11 also in 2004. Still another person posted saying Oct. 28 was recorded as the latest date ever sighted in Tennessee. I had seen several here up through Oct. 22 this year. Last year they were practically all gone by October 10, in spite of Oct. 2005 being much warmer that October 2006. Otherwise I have not done nearly as much birding this fall as I would have liked but I have seen a lot more warblers than I have seen before here at the golf course. Listed below are the birds I saw yesterday on the golf course. Canada Goose Mallard Northern Pintail ? Wild Turkey Great Blue Herron Black Vulture Turkey Vulture Red-tailed Hawk Morning Dove Red-bellied Woodpecker Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker Eastern Wood Pewee Blue Jay American Crow Tree Swallow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren Golden-crowned Kinglet Eastern Bluebird American Robin Northern Mockingbird Brown Thrasher European Starling Cedar Waxwing Yellow-rumped Warbler Pine Warbler Palm Warbler Chipping Sparrow Field Sparrow Song Sparrow White-throated Sparrow Dark-eyed Junco Northern Cardinal House Finch David Stone Ooltewah, Tn.
