Southwest Knox County
Ft. Loudon Lake
Today in the shallows off Cove Island, I found a mixed flock of
ducks and grebes. There was one Eared Grebe in breeding plumage
(black neck, yellowish plumes behind the ear, very thin black
upturned bill). In addition there were five other Eared Grebes in
various stages of plumage (patchy gray and white on the head and neck)
along with a lone Pied-billed Grebe. Initially the Grebes were only about 50'
offshore (time to buy a camera).
Also:
Bufflehead 12
Lesser Scaup 2
Blue-winged Teal 2
Wood Duck 4
Mallard 6
Bald Eagle 3 (On nest)
Osprey 1
