Jim Eager and I discovered a basic plumaged EARED GREBE above Chickamauga Dam on Chickamauga Lake around 10:00 AM on Monday (Feb. 26). The bird has been by several birders and was also seen this morning (Feb. 27). The best place to observe the grebe is from the public boat landing at the Chickamauga Marina directly above the dam (there is a floating dock there that is a perfect platform for viewing). The bird has been feeding just upstream from the landing at various distances. There a few Common Loons in the area, but no Horned Grebes were observed in the area so far. This seems to be the first documented (several photos have been taken) record of the species for Hamilton County. Some White-winged Scoters and Greater Scaup have been reported in the area also.
