We lost one of the great shorebird gurus and teachers when Jeff Wilson
passed. There are some really good existing field guides for shorebirds.
Some of my personal favorite are (roughly in order of preference)...
Shorebirds: An identification guide to the waders of the world
Prater, Hayman, and Marchant
(oldy but goody Helm Guide with plates, not photos)
Shorebirds of North America, Europe, and Asia: A photographic guide
Richard Chandler
(revised edition of the classic, I put this one at the top of the photo
guides, equally as good as, if not better than the Helm guide... Good to
have one of each)
Shorebirds of North America: The photographic guide
Dennis Paulson
The Shorebird Guide
O'Brien, Crossley, and Karlson
(more of a holistic, giss-based approach to ID, a nice compliment to the
others which are more feather-by-feather approaches)
