[TN-Bird] Ducks-Shorebirds-Peregrine-Terns - Shelby Co.

July 18-19, 2009

Lots of Least Terns on the Mississippi Sandbars plus adult and immature
Black Terns heading south. B-b Whistling Ducks are settling in and I'm sure at
least 3 pair are setting up house keeping which makes them harder to find
for about 3 weeks. The leucistic male Mallard is taking his molt break
among the Mallards at the covered pits for his 3rd year. I jumped 3 pair of
Bobwhite and a small covey of 13 birds at Ensley. Two adult Broad-wings were
nice treats along with Mississippi Kites seen all across the Memphis skyline
this weekend.

Shorebird numbers were variable due to quite a few birds heading south and
just passing through as habitat is at its low here at the "Pits". The main
reason could also be the large adult Peregrine that put on a show for 3 of
us this Sunday. It took over an hour for the birds to return to the pits
and start loading up again. Late July is about right for early Peregrines
around here.

Two near breeding plumaged Sanderling on the sandbar out from Mud Island
were the only new addition to the returning shorebird list Sunday.
Good Birding !!!
