Following up on the short post from earlier, it was nice to finally be out and
birding in TN again! While the Brown Pelican and White Ibis were the definite
highlights, it was a nice day all around at Duck River. I did get rained on
during my trek out for the Pelican, but well worth it, as it's been 7 years
since I saw my last Brown Pelican in TN. Waders are present in large numbers,
dominated by Great Egrets with over 300 counted in one sweep of the scope. A
few Little Blues and Snowies were also around, and my 1st Black-crowned
Night-Heron of the year for TN.
A few shorebirds were seen, of 7 common and expected species. There was a lot
of fresh flats over in the big pool out from the pumphouse, but I didn't have
time to make it over there to begin to do it justice. My only terns were a
group of Caspians, with young birds making a big fuss while still begging for
food from adults.
I have posted several photos from today, and have a few posted from a trip
earlier in the month with Jeff Wilson, Gail King, Joe Guinn, and myself to
southeast AR and them coming back up the MS delta. These photos are in a new
gallery: http://www.pbase.com/mctodd/summerfall_2009 , or the 1st one starts
