[TN-Bird] Dos Avocets at TVA Lake / Rio Grande Run

I missed the pits last week because of a quickie trip to the Rio Grande
Valley for a little birding and the opening of the World Birding Center: I
could
not wait for the weekend and cut out a little early this afternoon.

There were a lot of Gadwall, Shovelers, Coots and Ring-billed Gulls sleeping
on the ash spits and hunkered in the middle were two male, winter plumaged
Avocets. For the first time in two months the injured Snowy Egret was not
present
but in among the Great Egrets was an immature Cattle Egret, different from
the one two weeks ago as it had a solid yellow bill and yellowish legs.

There are still a few thousand shorebirds with Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs,
Western, Least, Dunlin and Stilt Sandpipers plus a couple of Wilson's Snipe
seen in one short turn around the area.

For those that might be leaning toward a Rio Grande Run the Black-headed
Nightingale Thrush showed up after an extended absence and we had great looks
at a
male Green-breasted Mango Hummingbird. Lots of nice photo opps. Even got to
photo a Black Witch Moth and a Malachite Butterfly. It was a trip mainly to
introduce another birder to the area so we birdied mainly for habitat from
Laguna
Atascosa to Falcon Dam and got 140 species in 2-1/2 days. The Valley is still
the super producer but getting harder to bird because of the extensive
development. If you have not been down for a while you will not recognize most
of
the area.

Good Birding!!!
