Sat am - Doaks Creek/ Davis Creek TVA area/ Campbell County , TN
N. of Lafollette
I saw :
14 Wood Ducks 10 Mallards
3 Great Blue Herons 12 Green Heron
**2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON- First ever seen here.
1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER
4 Killdeer 28 Goldfinch
Jays/ Crows YB Cuckoo 1 heard
Cardinal / Mo.Doves 9 Cedar Waxwing
The water level is dropping in this area exposing small area of mud
flats.
The most unusual bird (actually behaviour) was a young COOPERS HAWK that
kept dive-bombing the Wood Ducks that were near shore in a shallow
area..He would then walk around the edge of the lake in the mud much like
I have seen them do in bushes/ on the ground etc when they miss a
passerine. He was a muddy mess. One time, he caused the ducks to fly from
the area across the pond, and then pursued them!! Big expectations, this
Cooper's!! (or nuts )
Though not many birds, there is always at least one moment when birding
that stands out.
