[TN-Bird] Diehard Snowy Owling Pays Off

We arrived at the Snowy Owl location at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and spent the rest
of the day looking over the field where it was most often seen and driving
around looking in other possible sites. Dozens of people stopped at the gate
location and looked during the day but no one saw the owl except a Saturn
worker who reported seeing it early in the morning over by the plant. We
talked with birders from Atlanta, Chattanooga, Clarksville, and Dean Edwards
from Knoxville while we watched and waited.
By about 5:00 the number of birders was down to eight and we all decided we
would stick it out until it was too dark to see. At 5:40 one of the group saw
something fly in and land on the seventh utility pole north of the gate viewing
area. Three scopes were on it immediately and it was the Snowy Owl. What a
beautiful bird and how quickly disappointment and tiredness turned into
excitement and cold fingers and toes were forgotten. In just a few minutes it
was too dark to see the bird and the group left. We went down the road past
the Cracker Barrel and turned around and came back to the shoulder of the road
opposite the owl and got one last look before heading home.
