10-19-03 Sunday Clear skies/ apx. 48 dg. / calm
This morning at 9:20 am I found an immature Dickcissel in the
company of many
Savannah, White-Crowned , Song , Swamp and Field Sparrows.
The bird was located in Jacksboro, TN behind the National Guard Armory
and near
the industrial park in a grown over weedy spoil area. It was observed
eating seeds near the top of weeds for 20-30 minutes from apx. 15 ft away
down in a gully . This area has proved to be a hot spot several fall
seasons in a row for good numbers of Sparrows, especially after cool
fronts on calm sunny mornings.
Also present were 2 Vesper Sparrows nearby as well as 2
Orange-Crowned Warblers seen at a distance of about 10 ft. in full
sunlight on red Sumac berries.
Inquire off list if furthur directions desired. The location is apx.
5 miles from Cove Lake State Park in Caryville, TN.
Other birds present were the usual local residents along with Common
Yellowthroated Warbler- 2 Palm Warbler 6 Many Yellow-Rumped
Warbler 26+
