[TN-Bird] Devi'ls Backbone State Natural Area

Devil's Backbone State Natural Area
on the Natchez Trace Parkway
Lewis Co., TN
29 April 2007
-
A three-mile hike on the trail at Devil's Backbone State Natural Area provided
some surprises. OVENBIRDS galore. Every few hundred feet there seemed to be an
Ovenbird singing like crazy. Most were out on a limb and easy to see. One was
on the trail well ahead of me gathering nesting material--first, a small blade
of grass, then a leaf, then another leaf, until its bill was stuffed when it
flew off.
TANAGERS everywhere-singing and calling. Both Scarlet and Summer Tanagers. Male
and Female. They were all there in great numbers.

ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS--six of them and everyone of them female. I saw no
males.

RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS-- 2 deep in the woods, calling and working the bark.

CERULEAN WARBLER--one was right overhead singing. I gave myself a great case of
"warbler neck", looking straight up, hoping he would move for a better view.
After 5 or so minutes, he did move--he flew off and disappeared.

BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER--one in the parking lot at eye level gleaning and
working a bush 25 feet from me. At one point it was too close for my binoculars.
