[TN-Bird] Crossville Christmas Bird Count results (Wed. Dec. 17)

The 7 parties on the Crossville CBC held on Wet Wednesday (Dec. 17) found 82
species, with 8 count-week species. This was up from our first count 2 years
ago of 78 species but way down from the 92 species of last year. It didn't
help that hawks and vultures were down and that we couldn't find any
blackbirds (perhaps should they be boldfaced if we get any next year!).
Fortunately, the land birds were active, but we lost time between the rain
showers. I'd like to put in a plug for using a small umbrella and NEOS
overboots.

Stephen Stedman found a Loggerhead Shrike (which I've yet to see in
Cumberland County). He also found 1 female and 2 male Ring-necked Pheasants
at Cumberland Mt. Farm. These likely hunt club survivors weren't officially
counted; but in case this is the epicenter of a dispersion, we'll have it
documented!

Other notables were an adult Bald Eagle at Lake Tansi, where a pair has been
hanging out this fall (and reducing the coot population). Also at Lake
Tansi, Doug Downs found a first-year Herring Gull. Other notables on this
lake were a couple of Ring-billed Gulls, a Common Loon, and a Horned Grebe.
Nearby Lake Hiawatha had its usual 400 Ring-necked Ducks plus a male
Pintail, which is unusual here this time of year.

Barbara Stedman found a House Wren and 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches (I haven't
seen any this fall). We had very good numbers of Pine Siskins (5/7 parties
had a total of 241) and a few Purple Finches (3/7 parties had 13 birds).

On the Monday before the count (Dec. 15) Joseph Mast and DJ Stanley refound
the Clay-colored Sparrow, but they couldn't get it for the count day. This
was the bird on Nicholson Rd. which was seen and photographed by Joseph
Mast, DJ Stanley, and me on Nov. 29. Neither DJ nor I could find it this
morning (Dec. 19), but we couldn't find the big sparrow flock there either.

Another good count-week bird was the Merlin that Joseph and DJ found on
Monday (Dec. 15) at Lake Hiawatha.
