This morning I made a quick trip to the Foothills Parkway in Blount County
to look for Ruffed grouse. While I did not see or hear any grouse, I did
encounter Red crossbills at three locations. I had a pair about 1/4 mile from
the
intersection of Happy Valley Road and the entrance into Top of the World. I
then had 5 in the top of a maple tree where the entrance road and road to
the Parkway intersect. I then had 3 pair feeding or getting gravel or salt in
the middle of US 129 about 1.5 miles south of the Foothills Parkway. I
observed these birds for nearly 10 minutes without any traffic passing. It was
fascinating to see them use their tongue to poke into the cracks on the
roadway.
The males are starting to change from orange to red.
I only regret I didn't have my camera with me since they were no more than
15 feet away much of the time.
