Hello Shane & TN birders,
I was also at Cove Lake State Park yesterday, but earlier in the day at
about 10:15am. It was rather cold, very windy and spitting rain, which made
birding difficult, or at least not as much fun! I too found the lake
practically deserted, but I did see a single Horned Grebe in the middle of
the lake, and 6 Ring-billed Gulls that were loafing on the far (west) side.
The Horned Grebe showed a white cheek and black cap, with a clear line of
demarcation between the two, so I would guess that this is a different bird
than the ones Shane found. Plus, there was only one.

Perhaps the system that was moving through as I was there blew in some new
birds in addition to blowing my telescope over...

I stopped by the Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery on the way home to see if I could
remember where it was, and other than a Great Blue Heron on a nest, the only
birds of interest were 3 apparent Canada Goose/Egyptian Goose hybrids. At
first glance they looked like Canadas, but they had orange legs, additional
white frosting on the face, and the white chin patch was a slightly
different color and shape. I definitely did a double-take!

I'm in Knoxville for a little while, so I hope to see you out there
somewhere-
Andrew
