I went to Cove Lake S.P.(Campbell Co.) thur afternoon from around 1-3:30 pm
hoping to find some leftover waterfowl but was disappointed to find the lake
practically empty. I was hoping for a male C. Goldeneye or maybe one of the C.
Mergansers reported there but I guess they moved on. I did however see 3 Grebes
- 1 being Pie-Billed and 2 others close by that appeared to be Eared Grebe.
This would be a new bird for me - they seemed to have the cresent-shaped dull
white pattern on the face of the winter plumage Eared. All of the Horned Grebes
I've seen had a more clearly-defined, bolder white cheek pattern. I couldn't
get a close eough look at head or beak shape to really compare. I know Eared
Grebe have been reported here before.
At the campground area I saw a male Hooded Merganser, and 2 Red Br.
Nuthatches and 2 Yellow-Rumped Warblers were in some cedar trees along the
bank. When leaving I saw a beautiful juvenile Red-Shouldered Hawk being
harassed by crows in some trees around the swimming pool area. They finally
left it alone and it took to the air again doing a few circles for me so that I
could ID and enjoy it.
