TVA Lake / Robco Lake
Shelby Co. TN
An early morning trip to TVA Lake, caught birds just starting to drop in and
the numbers were only about 1/3 of the last visit. No male Long-tailed but
the female was already sleeping away in the morning sun. The Scoters were "no
shows" in the afternoon and total numbers were again very low but I didn't
have time to wait for a shift change. Still a high % of Greater Scaup in with
the Lesser Scaup plus token Gadwall, Mallard, Shoveler, Green-winged Teal,
Canvasback, Ring-necked, Hooded Merganser and Ruddy Duck, plus Pied-billed
Grebes and Coots.
Two trips to Robco Lake and extended scans at the huge concentration,
allowed slightly better photos and looks at the sharp adult COMMON MERGANSER
hen
and the female LONG-TAILED DUCK but the treat of the day was the 250 plus
White
Pelicans that looked like a white cloud cruising the lake. By mid afternoon,
their numbers had grown to over 350 and I watched as about 100 decided the
feeding was better elsewhere as the effortlessly rose over head and peeled off
to the south. You can only really see well, about half of the numbers on the
lake. No telling what else hides on the far west end in the milling throngs.
