[TN-Bird] Common Loon TVA Lake - Ensley

Oct. 21, 2005
TVA Lake-Ensley Bottoms,
The Pits and Mud Island
Shelby Co. TN

An appointment fell through and I had a couple of hours to indulge an itch.
At the Pits, I found more ducks, lots of Killdeer and Least Sandpipers, 3
Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Stilt Sandpiper, 1 Western Sandpiper, 1 Pectoral
Sandpiper
and 4 Wilson's Snipe.

On TVA Lake, there was an adult winter plumaged Common Loon, my first of
season. I believe it is only my second for these small lake but they are seen
frequently just across the levee in McKellar Lake. A few photos were taken.
There were also assorted ducks, Canada Geese, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets
and a few DC Cormorants, 9 Coots, 3 Tree Swallows, plus a couple of
Pied-billed
Grebes, using the lake. A long string of 131 DC Cormorants flew south.

On the Mississippi River, I had 3 high flying Herring Gulls, 2 adults and an
immature, an adult Bald Eagle, 7 Coots, a flight of 9 Pintail, 6 Least
Sandpipers, Killdeer, Great Blues, Great Egrets, 2 Tree Swallows and NO Chimney

swifts.
Good Birding !!!
