Ovenbird: There are two December or later winter records in Nashville for the Ovenbird; one individual, December 2, 2003, seen walking around in downtown Nashville; and one individual, December 14, 1978 - January 8, 1979, at a residence. Jane said she would sometimes see it walk along the top of a fence rail. Common Nighthawk: There are Nashville winter records of Common Nighthawk through at least December 26, 1994. When Galen Lenhart lived in Nashville, he would frequently have the species to late November into December. His residence was on a hill near Vanderbilt and the birds would swoop low through his yard at dusk presumably feeding. Portia Macmillan lived near and also had the species. Birmingham, Alabama, has late December (later?) records of the species. The Caprimulgidae family is the only family, that I am aware, where true hibernation has been verified in birds, that being a Poor-will. A Killdeer flying around at night lit by the lights can give the wrong illusion as to size and species.
