I wanted to post fairly late response to Richard Connors note about the lack of
Eurasian Collared-Doves in the immediate Nashville area. I live in Smyrna
(northern Rutherford Co) and have no problem finding 10-15 pairs of
Collared-Doves. I have 2-3 pairs on my street and find them pretty regularly
around town, esp. in neighborhoods. I would say they are now not uncommon in
Smyrna. I flushed 10 from a power substation near my house on Saturday
morning, which is the same place I had 169 in Aug 2008.
My thought is that the bigger, more open yards, some large grassy fields, some
gravel lots, and construction areas in the neighborhoods and shopping centers
provide better habitat than in south Nashville (i.e. Crieve Hall, areas around
Radnor Lake, and the Ellington Ag Center) where the trees are much larger and
there is less open ground. I don't see many Collared-Doves, if any, when
cycling out in the rural areas south and east of Nashville. If I was not
riding and breathing hard, seeing double, and actually looked around more,
maybe I'd see more. Anyway, they seem to be primarily in town. Their numbers
have apparently risen in the last couple years in my neck of Smyrna.
Over the last few days I've heard singing Northern Bobwhite in at least 8
different locations in western Rutherford, eastern Williamson, and southern
Wilson Co. I found all these while cycling. I will occasionally hear a quail
here and there, but I had 4 on 2 different days!
I also had an uncommon summer pair of Cedar Waxwings yesterday southeast of
Lebanon in Wilson Co.
From Richard Connors: June 16, 2010, Rutherford County TN
1 Eur. Collared-Dove also in Eagleville. Don't know if we're still keeping tabs
on these, they do not seem to be in the immediate Nashville area, but seem
established in farming communities out in the country-side.
