Last night, Monday June 7, Lyn Bales and I visited the Chota Waterfowl Management Area in north Monroe County, south of Vonore. We were hoping to hear Whip-poor-wills and we weren't disappointed. Right at 9:00 p.m., the first of at least 4 CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOWs began to call. They called from at least three locations - 2 in the refuge, 1 across the river. At 9:06, the first of at least 3 WHIP-POOR-WILLs began calling. At times only one species called, a few times both called together. We also saw 2 AMERICAN WOODCOCK flying, but not displaying or calling. Unfortunately, we didn't hear any owls.
